Gaining traction is tricky business, but with healthy action steps real change IS possible.
What would you love to see happening differently in your life?
Where could a little attention make a big change?
Check out these Action Step errors and see if there’s a Aha waiting for you!
1) Putting Off Trying Something
A little step forward is better than not trying anything at all. In our coach training we like to call this “research”. If your little step doesn’t work out like you had hoped, at least you know it doesn’t work for you.
2) Making Vague Goals
“Eating more healthy” is not a good action step. Push it out a bit. What exactly does that mean for you – do you need to eat more vegetables? How many servings per day would it take to make that a SMART goal*? – do you need to drink more water? – eat less sugar? You get the picture. Drilling down on your goals and making them specific will deliver measurable results.
3) Going It Alone
We’ve all done. Made a goal but not told anyone at all about it. It’s easy to keep your goals to yourself as a layer of protection “just in case” you change your mind, but sharing them with someone heightens the likelihood of actually doing them especially if you can find someone to do them with you.
4) Leaving It Open Ended
The best goals have some sort of timing associated with them. They have a start date to be sure, and probably some timing along the way toward an end goal by a certain date. Saying you are going to do something “some time this year” or “when things slow down a bit” may ease your conscience for the moment but won’t be likely to assist you toward accomplishing something new.
5) Set It And Forget It
Reassessing your goals and your living your Life On Purpose* only happens if you have a plan in place for reevaluating your progress and current priorities.
Personally I am a pretty work-hard-get-things-done kind of gal, but #3 has always been tricky. I figure if I keep my action steps to myself I can adjust them at will. This, of course, backfires when I talk myself out of good things and into retaining the status quo.
So here’s my plan. (It’s simple really, but will make a radical difference.)
I’m going to talk more. I’m going to tell people what I am planning on doing. It seems almost silly saying it out loud, but I know it will make the difference in my getting traction or staying stuck.
Which mistake are you most prone to and what do you need to do about it?
