“Everyone talks about leadership.
Few talk about coaching.
Yet, this is the missing paradigm that makes good leaders great.”

1 What is coaching?
Coaching is a communication mindset of assisting people with forward movement in whatever area they choose. Good coaching includes things like active listening, asking powerful question, focusing on a goal, ownership, action steps and follow through. Often used in caregiving and/or leadership development the principles of coaching are far reaching and have effected paradigm shifting change in business interactions, fitness and wellness, parenting, pastoring and many more arenas.
Pastors and leaders can use coaching to help people grow spiritually by coming alongside them as they go to God and ask what His plans are for whatever they are facing. Businessmen are using coaching to discern their clients real needs and help them toward desired goals. Fitness or Health coaches use coaching to assist people toward specific desired outcomes. And parents can learn to help their children make and live with their own choices.
Most adults do not respond well to being told what to do. All in all – coaching is a new way of communication that puts the ownership for choosing a goal and successful accomplishment of that goal on the person looking for change. In the past – pastors, coaches, leaders and even parents have carried the weight of discerning what the problem is, and then prescribing what to do about it. Coaching differs from many other types of one-on-one relationships in that it is focused entirely on the individual being coached rather than on the experience or methods of the person giving counsel.

5 What does it take to set up a professional coaching practice?
1) Legal Structure
It is my understanding that at this time there is very little state or federal regulation on coaching, so simply what is needed is your own LLC or DBA or some sort of legal host for your business and funds.
Before we get ahead of ourselves with legalize, the more important thing is having the skills to actually help people. Getting set up in one thing, getting repeating clients is a whole different ball game.
3) Paying Clients
It is a usually a big shift to go from mentor, pastor, business person or helpful peer to professional coach. The bottom line is that your influence needs to be broad enough that people would pay to have you help them, but there are certainly ways to make that transition more smooth. I’d be happy to coach you through that!
