10- Coaching is a journey of forward movement. Coaching, like a stage coach or the proverbial pumpkin in Cinderella, is a means where people move from where they are to where they are going. Coaching assists in getting somewhere.
9- Coaching is all about “Ah Ha” moments. Good coaching helps you see things from another perspective than you have on your own. It helps you see things from God’s viewpoint or maybe brings out into the light blind spots or perhaps even helps with awareness in places where there was plain ol’ ignorance.
8- Coaching in uncommon. Telling is more common, where a leader just tells someone what to do instead of patiently coming alongside a person and helping them to find God’s unique plan for their situation. Tellers create dependents. Coaches help people learn to hear God’s voice.
7- Coaching is challenging. We become comfortable in the ruts of our common behavior or the circular reasoning that has kept us stuck where we are. Change is a struggle, but “if you always do what you’ve always done…” Coaching develops Action Steps that get people places!
6- Coaching is authentic. There is an incredible amount of vulnerability in true coaching, from the coach first and then also from the person being coached.
5- Coaching is going deeper than just changing a habit or acquiring a goal. Good coaching looks into what was holding you back and helps address common threads in your life thereby freeing you for the adventures God has in store.
4- Coaching is Active Listening which intently paying attention what the person is really saying, watching for curiosity triggers and not just thinking what to say next, what to suggest or hurrying the person along so you can share your story.
3- Coaching is Asking Powerful Questions. These types of questions take people where they would not have gone on their own. They help people own their future. They alert people to red flags. They assist in developing action steps.
2- Coaching is life changing. To highlight #1 once again, coaching takes people to places they would not likely get to without a coach to help them. Coaching changes dreams into goals and ideas into reality.
1- Coaching is Biblical! The first recorded words of God to man are a powerful question. Do you think God really didn’t know where Adam was? No, He knew but He was helping create awareness for Adam to see for himself that he was hiding. Or how about Jesus and knowing His true identity? When He asked Peter, “Who do you say that I am?” He was using coaching and creating a challenge for Peter to decide for himself and declare truth.
Coaching is not new, it is age old and you can see it throughout the Bible. God chose to give us free will and He compels us to choose wisely. Good coaching does the same!
