For the last couple of months any work time that was not scheduled with coaching appointments or training sessions has been devoted to a new curriculum I am planning on releasing called Clear Communication and Healthy Confrontation. I hear so many people that need real life tools to help in this arena and I have read and studied it for years. It seemed a simple fix to help them out. I thought I was being led by the wind of the Spirit. Then I talked to marketing guru and friend Mike Kim. He challenged me to finish my book before investing in an additional training track. That kind of rocked my world.
I have been working on my own for a number of years now and making decisions about my time and focus without much outside input. When Mike questioned me, I had to really take stock. I have always tried to follow what I thought God was saying and move forward in that way. But then I took a dose of my own medicine. I realized that I have taught a discerning process for years, and even blogged about a couple weeks ago, and I needed to apply it to this choice. Are You Sure That Is God? Checkpoints to knowing if your dream is from God!
So, here’s what I did….
I sent an email to a trusted group of varied people in my life – leaders and peers, family and friends, seasoned and culturally connected (that’s a nice way of saying old and young). In the email I laid out what I had thought I was supposed to be doing and what a couple other options were. My next steps are not necessarily up for grabs to the highest bidder or being democratically decided by the most votes, but I value outside input. Not only do I value it – I need it. We all do.
Before Mike offered the course correction possibility I thought I was headed in the right direction. But I really needed some outside perspective. It can be really easy to throw the “God card” and say that God told you to do something, but that kind of thinking does not allow for others to give alternate perspective input or ideas. It takes true humility and tenacious willingness to think outside the box.
How about you? Where in your life you might be “throwing the God card” and need to be open to other perspectives and outside the box thinking?
I love that God’s will can be like bumper bowling if we let Him help us course correct as needed. I challenge you to take a look at your life and offer him rights to course correct you through engaging others input as needed.
