Jesus used Word Pictures all the time. They were a great way for Him to expound on Kingdom principles and offer deeper meaning and impact than simply direct teaching could have. In Matthew 5:41 He says, “If someone forces you to go with him one mile, go with him two miles.” I was first introduced to the concept of First Mile First through the teaching of Derek Prince. His booklet entitled “You can’t go the second mile till you have gone The First Mile” kind of says it all.
We are all kind of enticed with extras. I mean really – who wants to clean the bathroom? But Jesus and Derek Prince are pointing out to us here that we really shouldn’t be doing extra things until we have done the required things. If you are a student this means your studies come first and then extracurricular involvement. If you are married this means your spouse should be getting your attention first before others. If you are a Christian going to church regularly should come before feeding the homeless. Tithing before special gifts, etc. I think you get the picture.
On the other hand sometimes we can just stop at the first mile. We “check off” the requirements and don’t even really even stop to listen if maybe God has something second for us to do. What if there is a next gear you could be shifting into? What if there are new levels for you to enjoy?
So, what’s your deal? Are you more likely to go for the shiny extras and neglect the first mile? Or are you more likely to stop at the first mile and not go the extra distance? Either way God wants to meet you where you are and reveal more of Himself to you! Go ahead lean into Him, you will find Him strong!
