If you look up the definition of clarity in good ol’ google you will see, among other things, “the quality of being easy to see or hear; sharpness of image or sound”.
Clarity brings something into focus. But what if the thing you need focus on isn’t something you see or hear – what if it’s a next step or even your life purpose?
There is a certain pressure to know where you are going and be able to explain how you are going to get there. (Or you may even fear a pesky relative at Christmas asking why you aren’t there already!) Sometimes seeing into the future can feel foggy at best. Sometimes it’s not the end goal that’s the problem but rather the pathway. Let me explain.
There are two sides to forward movement and two extremes associated. On one side of the pendulum is the need for targeted direction, SMART goals and the lot. If you don’t know where you are going you are not likely to just “arrive” at the right spot. For instance, if you want to retire well you will likely need to save money and not just expect to win the lottery. However, pushing this side of the pendulum out too far can look like a dry series of goals accomplished and targets acquired. When the direction for the goals is not coming from dreams and desires God has put in your heart then actually hitting that target becomes a miss. This mentality can become a dangerous performance oriented worldview that is disconnected with the Spirit of God and His plans for your life.
On the flip side is the mentality that we just need to live in the Spirit and life will all work out. And don’t get me wrong, it’s important to live by the Spirit, but this side of the pendulum is actually goal resistant. There is a preference to just hang loose and see how things go. This too can be right. If we get all worked up about goals and miss out on a life in the Spirit we can miss out on the supernatural life that is available to us in the kingdom worldview. However being too heavenly minded could cause us to be no earthly good.
When Jesus told us to repent He meant for us to change our heart and our lives. It’s not enough to say we are “walking by the Spirit” but not live in a way that people can see us moving toward our goals. However if all we are doing is acting out goals we have clearly missed the mark.
Which side do you tend toward naturally – letting things just happen or being over concerned about getting things done right? And how is one to find clarity in the midst of these possible pendulum swings?
The answer is simple but profound. You walk with Him. Success equals an active relationship with God. If He is guiding you then you are sure to be found inside healthy boundaries and not swinging outside to an extreme. It’s hard though. We defend our extremes by finger pointing to the opposite side. We fear the other side and if fear is driving then God is not.
Ask yourself these questions:
- What is driving my life right now?
- Am I not moving forward because God is guiding me to wait or because I am afraid to try things?
- Am I unclear about focus because I am afraid to decide on a plan and build some action steps?
- Have I really thought through what God may be saying in the midst of my stuff right now or am I just doing what comes naturally?
Every God sent dream is going to take some work to become a goal and then a reality. Clarity comes when we see what He is doing and join Him there.
