You know those team building activities where you do something with a group and you are all supposed to grow because of it? I was in the middle of one of those events when it happened. There was a group of about 20 of us and we were standing on a tarp that we were supposed to turn over without any of us getting off the tarp. I was in the far corner and our the job of those in that far corner was to try to move as far over as we could so those on the other side would have more room and could try to turn over the tarp.
I was standing next to a student who I had mentored, we were pretty good friends and I trusted him. He was a body builder as well so he was pretty strong. I had my arm up around his neck as I leaned on my tip toes over the “hot lava”. He had an arm around my waist. My fingernails were digging into his neck as I was struggling to hang on. Corey calmly looked down at me and kindly said those powerful words, “I’ve got you.” He was quietly offering his strength while I was clearly thinking it all depended on me. I let go. I didn’t fall. He really did have me all along. My efforts weren’t really accomplishing much except anxiety on my part and fingernail marks in his neck.
That moment has come back to me over and over again. I see God offering me His strength in areas where I am striving to make things happen. When I still myself and hear his voice saying, “I’ve got you” it changes everything.
Where might God be speaking that to you? I can assure you He is trustworthy and strong. If you hear Him saying He’s got you then just let go, release your anxiety and striving and let Him be Who He is!
