When I was twenty something we went to visit my grandfather one day. He had been retired for as long as I could remember so it was unusual to find him all dressed up when we arrived.
I asked where he was going.
He said he wasn’t going anywhere.
So I inquired why he was all dressed up. And he said, “Because they said they were coming…”
My grandfather worked hard for a living, made something of himself and was fastidious about savings. He was an intelligent man but like so many in his generation he had gotten hooked.
He believed the man.
The day before he had received mail that said he should be standing by as: the prize patrol may be visiting his residence that day!
Of course they never came. I truly felt so bad for him.
He never said a word about it again, but there was an inner disappointment murmur questioning in his soul.
Sometimes I feel like that about my life… I have had thoughts like:
I wonder if I am supposed to be farther along by now.
It feels like maybe I am missing something.
What if I never achieve the impact I hoped I would?
God offers us something real!
My grandfather hoped in something that was not real. It was craftily worded, but unreliable.
I hate to admit it, but at times I get hooked just like he did. I look for ‘deliverance’ or meaning or value from something outside myself instead of finding it internally where God is offering real life.
What I really crave is a knowing that I am right where I am supposed to be, doing what I am designed to be doing, affecting who I need to be touching, that I am loved for who I am and so on.
But, when my focus is on external circumstances instead of on how I am processing life, my hopes get skewed.
So what’s the secret to more than a chance at winning?
That’s easy – redefine winning!
God offers us something different – something very real, not craftily worded bogus promises.
God offers us real meaning in life, acceptance and love right where we are at, hope for the future, peace that passes understanding and personally designed pathway for growth into more of all He has for us!
What’s not to love?
But here’s the kicker. It’s not easy. All our lives we have practiced other things.
- We focus on our circumstances and we complain a lot.
- We are most often overwhelmed and accept that as normal.
- We measure ourselves and others using different measurements than God does.
- We question and doubt.
- We walk alone when we don’t need to.
The list could go on.
But what if, just what if, the tables got turned? What if we did something new?
What would life be like if:
- we were consumed with how blessed we were and that was our primary focus?
- we walked in peace with healthy expectations of what could be done in a certain time frame?
- we accepted ourselves and others the way God roots for us – seeing us for where we really are at while offering hope for even more?
- truly walked in faith believing He had good things for us and asking Him to reveal them as we move along together in the journey He designed for us?
What if we slowed down and actually took time to listen to what He has been whispering all along?
My grandfather (and I) looked for something from the outside to make life worthwhile when the “win” was on the inside available all along. With God we can be sure of winning because He defines it much differently than the world does.
Success is an active relationship with God! He wants to walk with you no matter what life throws at you.
What do you need to change to view life this way?
How can you help those around you focus in a way where “the win” could be real?
