Recently I attended the third workshop in the Leadership Metaformation series by Tony Stolzfus called Living from the heart. I like to wait a week or so and process my thoughts before writing an eval so here goes.
Lasting Impact – 11/10
There is some clear genius involved in the design of these workshops in that they all have a corresponding twelve week follow-up built in to the experience! I don’t know about you but I have been to plenty of conferences, seminars or workshops that I thought were wonderful and really touched my heart, but in the weeks and months that follow I can’t really tell you what they were about or what happened. Not so here. Each participant is in a four person small group during the workshop and then stays with that group for the duration of the twelve week follow-up. They meet weekly and go through a coordinated personal devotional and then process their lives and the material they worked with together. And then the BONUS comes – in weeks 8-12 each individual works through what it would take the transformation they received and share it with the culture they are in. I have not seen, or even heard of, anything like this in any other seminar type gathering. This method delivers. Not only do I remember what happened to me personally in the first workshop I went to in this series, it continued to transform me during the twelve weeks that followed and then spilled over to the people around me and I am sure this one will be the same. It’s not easy or common to get an 11 out of 10 in an eval, but this category certainly deserves it! This workshop series far exceeded any hopes or expectations I had!
Amenities – 8/10
The leather journal given to each participant in the amazing Book of Life experience was life changing for many who received it. Tony met with each participant for a phone session talking through a difficult experience from each of our pasts and mining it for meaning. (Who does that?!) He then rewrote each person’s story from God’s perspective, ‘reframing’ what could have destroyed us, or at least clouded our view of the truth, and showing how God wanted to use it for good in our lives. Priceless. The actual facility the event was in was wonderful; great seating, good coffee, plenty of room to spread out etc. The one downside, and it was noteworthy, was the 3 ring binder handed out with our workshop notes. It was not complete and had the wrong cover on it. Since this was the first time this event was offered publically, I am sure this will be amended in the future.
Presentation – 9/10
As promised this workshop offered much more than what Tony refers to as “the talking head”. We played games, watched impactful video shorts, had one-on-one conversations with our peer partners, were able to practice healing process facilitation on each other, and in general was super conversationally interactive. These seminars are always limited to only 32 participants! Again with the genius planning! Tony is continually asking for feedback and stories of what God is doing as the information is shared. He is not only checking for understanding but ensuring each participant is experiencing the transforming power of God. The only reason this category got a 9 instead of a 10 is because the second day was pretty repetitious with teaching and processing and then the last day had several games in a row. It would have been better to spread that out throughout the week.
Price Point – 10/10
Comparatively with other similar events, bang for the buck this gig is a steal. Likely this is due to the fact that this seminar series is only a year old. I hope in the future the prices will not significantly increase, but if I were you I would get in on these as soon as you can fit them into your schedule.
True transformation is much more than working up the will power to change some unwanted behavior, and it is much more than hearing some astounding insights. True transformation is change from the inside out. Living from the Heart offered just that!
