I’ve been ruminating on Ecclesiastes 11:5 for a couple years now and especially this last week. It says,
You don’t know where the wind will blow, and you don’t know how a baby grows inside the mother. In the same way, you don’t know what God is doing,or how he created everything.
There are two really great word pictures in there. The first is about wind. We can’t really see wind, but we can sure feel it and we can certainly see the effects of it. Wind can be harsh and harmful or it can give us power, or direction.
Wind is kind of like God. He moves us if we are prepared and willing to receive His power or He can at times appear harsh or harmful. It’s all about perspective. A sailboat without its sails up is not going anywhere. And you can’t harness wind power without a turbine. This word picture tells us that God is always moving around us, but we may or may not be engaging in what He is doing. Our job is just to keep our sails up or our turbine in working order and we can allow the wind to move on us as He wills.
The other word picture is even more fascinating to me. It’s not rocket science, but did you know a pregnant woman is growing a little human inside of her? It’s amazing! The woman likely knows little about the inner workings of how to build a nervous system, and she probably can’t even name all the internal organs. She is not knowingly developing a liver on day 58 and yet out comes this fully functioning little baby!
I wonder if we fixate too much on getting things right and understanding how everything works together. We worry about whether or not we are “getting it” and yet God is doing something inside of us. Maybe it is simpler than we think. We might not know the inner workings of His system, and we probably can’t even name all the things He is doing and yet He is preparing something in us/through us that will be birthed. Our job is to remain healthy- feeding ourselves, getting proper rest, managing our stress levels, etc.
We can trust that He is the Creator/Orchestrator! He is moving us and empowering us through the Wind of His Spirit and He is readying something for birth within us!
