At one time or another I think everyone has found themselves in a downward spiral where you know you are thinking thoughts that are not going to take you where you really want to go. It triggers from some incident where we question ourselves, then grows to where we question God and then usually ends up with us in the dumps questioning all of life with our senses heightened to pain in every way. Things that were tolerable before become intolerable. It’s as if our eyes have been opened to see the difference between good and evil… we have eaten from the fruit.
We all go there from time to time. Be honest. We know in our heart of hearts that we should not give in, but it feels so real at the time. The facts overtake the truth and then the lies creep in. We lose focus and we are not really ourselves.
That’s what happened to our man Ralphie when he finally got to Santa’s lap. He got all caught up in the facts of the elf yelling at him, his own personal doubts and Santa being in a hurry that he lost sight of his goal of telling Santa what he really wanted for Christmas.
But then the powerful epiphany happened! Part way down the slide, in the midst of total despair, Ralphie stops himself cold. He climbs back up the slide and announces to Santa the desire of his heart “I want an Official Red Ryder Carbine-Action Two-Hundred-Shot Range Model Air Rifle”.
As I coach people I find that what stops people from spiraling down the slide to despair is different from person to person. We are all going to face facts that are going to lead us into a potential spiral and learning how to skillfully handle those times can make all the difference.
How do you do it? Let’s build a list of ways to “Stop The Madness!!” together. Please leave a comment and let’s see if we can share ideas that could help each other to the powerful life God has for each of us!
