Which of these statements feels like the monster that wants to eat you up right now!?!
“I don’t know what to do?”
“I’m so alone!”
“No one understands…”
“This wasn’t supposed to happen.”
“I’m just so overwhelmed!”
“But what if….?”
“It’s too hard!”
“I can’t be expected to …”
“I’m so confused.”
As American Christians sometimes we can fall into what I call “Disney syndrome” where we believe that everyone is supposed to live “happily ever after”.
The statements above are common thoughts most of us have had but that doesn’t make them right. They pull us away from walking with God in healthy interactive relationship.
I am in the midst of some business decisions right now so there are 3 or 4 of these monsters that are currently trying to take me down plus, “I’ve never done this before”! In fact only a week or so ago I was feeling really discouraged and even a little hopeless. (If you know me you know that negative emotions are not common for me and I don’t really deal with them well when I do get them.)
So, I text my husband and then head for the prayer room.
While I was in there just pouring out my heart I felt like God gave me the word picture of a woman in labor. I have four children so I know what that means. There were times when I just wanted to give up and times when I just wanted a break. In my pain there was some irrational reasoning and pleading that went on, but in the end it all paid off!!
Then I read this verse,
“In the same way I will not cause pain without allowing something new to be born,” says the Lord. “If I cause you the pain, I will not stop you from giving birth to your new nation,”says your God. Isaiah 58:11
How cool is that!
Let’s take another look. Did I read that right? It says God “causes” pain in there twice! What’s up with that?
Whenever there is something new on the way, a birthing process must take place. It’s not rocket science but it’s true.
Just then my husband texted me back. “Praying. This may be pain you are experiencing to push you forward.”
So, I am left with a choice. I can leave the birthing room and abort the process of new life coming forth OR I can hang in there and work through the pain of confusion, doubt, fear and anxiety. Press through being overwhelmed. And be rewarded with the NEW that God has for me.
What about you?
- Which of the monsters is trying to consume you?
- What do you need to do to defend yourself?
- What does God want you to birth through this pain?
