Volunteers are needed in almost every church or organization. Churches and organizations are full of people. And yet the needs usually exceed the people waiting in line to fill them.
So, what’s an org to do?
The secret is in the ask.
Usually the ask is generated by the need and comes in the form of pulpit announcements or shoulder taps. But work with me for a moment and think about another angle.
What if churches and organizations would start from the other side and work with their people to help them identify their God given strengths and interests and serve their people by helping them find their best fit.
When a person’s unique design is skillfully mined their intended destiny shines through and they are happy to give of their time and talents.
Let me explain. When people feel put upon to fill slots, they may do so for a season but in the long run they often feel taxed as their placement is draining them.
Instead, if an organization helps people understand their unique strengths and explore their passions, they help people engage where they feel the most energy.
When people do what they love where the love doing it there is a synergy that is God breathed. There is Destiny by Design.
You may be saying, “That sounds great in theory Cindy, but how could that play out in real life?” And I would say back, “I’m so glad you asked!”
Here’s two tools you can use:
1. Do the Book “Living Your Strengths”
Donald Clifton partnered with Marcus Buckingham to write the best seller, “Now, discover your strengths”. Then Clifton partnered with others to write a Christian version called, “Living Your Strengths”. This book will walk you through the original Strengths Finder test. (BE SURE TO BUY A NEW BOOK – as the access code is single use so you won’t be able to take the assessment if you purchase a used book. The Kindle version is okay though as they will email you a code to use for the test.)
The “Living Your Strengths” book will then expound on your specific strengths and how you can use them in the first portion of the book, but keep going! The second part of the book gives ideas for how you can best use your strengths in your church.
2. Take the STEP into your church family
Bridges Coaching offers a pathway for people and churches to connect their design with their destiny.
If you are reading this for a church or organization, there’s a way you can offer this pathway directly to your people. Buy them the book, have them take the survey and walk with them as they STEP into their pathway. (Contact Cindy for more info on how to directly set your people up with your church and this incredible connection.)
If you are an individual go directly to the STEP into your church family pathway and share your strength results (see step 1), and then take the interest survey. Make sure you have the email of a contact person at your church.
People who LOVE where they are giving often give more than anyone thought possible – even the individual! Time flies, impact is made and people are living out their Destiny by Design!
What’s not to love?!
This flip of asking where people fit BEFORE they get connected is risky! I can hear the “What if’s…” flying around and the biggest one is
What if we don’t have enough people interested in the places where we need volunteers to offer what we want to offer? Tune in next time where we’ll talk about the ever popular issue of filling slots in the nursery!
