I have a friend who is believing God for over $100,000 for his church this year and that’s on top of his current budget. I am pretty confident it will happen. The reason I’m confident is that this isn’t his first faith rodeo. He started young believing for enough a mission trip, and then believing for others to go on trips. He graduated to believing for things personally and then for his family and now his next is to believe for the needed additional funds for hiring additional staff.
On the other hand, I had a close friend in high school that confided in me that she was arrested for shoplifting. I was stunned, she had plenty of money and could have purchased what she lifted, but it had become a game to her. She started young pocketing packs of gum and sticks of makeup. It grew to trying on clothes and leaving a shirt or two under the one she wore in. And then eventually she walked out of a store with a bag and boots!
Whatever we put out minds to we can build into more.
Check out these thoughts from selections in Romans 8:5-14
Those who live following their sinful selves think only about things that their sinful selves want. But those who live following the Spirit are thinking about the things the Spirit wants them to do. …Those people who are ruled by their sinful selves cannot please God.
But you are not ruled by your sinful selves. You are ruled by the Spirit, if that Spirit of God really lives in you…
So, my brothers and sisters, we must not be ruled by our sinful selves or live the way our sinful selves want. If you use your lives to do the wrong things your sinful selves want, you will die spiritually. But if you use the Spirit’s help to stop doing the wrong things you do with your body, you will have true life.
The true children of God are those who let God’s Spirit lead them.
“If you build it they will come” this famous line from the movie Field of Dreams carried this same idea. Walking out something in faith is tricky, costly and risky. You may be misunderstood. You will likely have doubts. But your faith muscles will grow. The key is being led by the Spirit.
Hebrews 11:1 says, “Faith means being sure of the things we hope for and knowing that something is real even if we do not see it.”
I’ve been thinking lately about the Law of Progression. It’s simple really. We start small and grow into more.
When I first started running I could only do a couple blocks without stopping, but I kept at it till I could run miles!
My first faith adventures with my business started out much smaller than where I am at today. The point is a focus was chosen and then it was built upon.
The Law of Progression can go the other way too. I admit, some days I struggle with doubt or a sense of being overwhelmed and when I feel it coming on I have a decision to make. I can coddle those thoughts and build on them or I can put up the shield of faith and let those flaming darts bounce off.
So, what do you want more of?
My husband has been singing that chorus around the house lately, “I want more, I want more, I want more, won’t you pour it out?” I love that thought.
There IS more where that came from . We just need to decide what we are going to lean into. (P.S. when we don’t choose intentionally to move toward the positive, the unintentional choice is likely to slip into a downward spiral. If you aren’t intentionally moving forward, you are most likely slipping downward…)
I started two lists of things people can build on. See if you can find yourself in both lists. And please comment and add more to either one if you can!
Negative Spiral Possibilities:
- Feeling Misunderstood
Positive Spiral Opportunities:
I liked building that second list so much more!
So, the choice is yours!
What are you building? Where is the Law of Progression taking you?
Going up a spiral is more difficult than letting yourself slide down, but it is worth the work!
