I got to this year’s tri-regional conference and bumped into an International student who I have come to love this year. I asked him how he was doing and he responded by saying, “Today is my favorite day!” I wondered if it was his birthday or if he just loved conferences or possibly if this year’s speaker was especially intriguing to him. So, I asked him why it was his favorite day. His response humbled me and challenged me to the core. He said, “Oh I just wake up every day and make this choice – that today will be my favorite day.”
Now, you might be thinking that he really loves America so every day here is a favorite for him, but it isn’t true. While he loves America, he has a heart for his home country and is anxious to return and build the kingdom there. You might think he is wealthy and so of course he has that perspective, or you might think that he just fell in love, or that he recently received an honor of some kind but the truth is that this young man deals with a handicap. He cannot use his right arm and one leg does not fully function. He has also been through some very difficult experiences in his young life, but he has one very important thing going for him – perspective!
Marek chooses each day that he will look up and be grateful. Each day I seem him with a smiling face and a take-charge attitude. He will not be beaten by the things of life.
I think God has more good things planned for us each day than we actually experience. Recently it was my birthday and I love that special feeling you get all day; you can view even the most mundane things differently on your birthday because it is special. So, you do something for someone else and it feels special because inside you know that it was a choice to give to someone else on your birthday. You go grocery shopping and everything feels a little different because it is your birthday… know what I mean?
I wonder if every day could be like that? Could we choose to give and feel special? Could we decide that today is a special day, just because we have Jesus.
Thank you, Marek, for you enticing example!
Close your eyes with me right now and breathe Him in. He wants to meet you where you are and take you deeper. The stuff of life will lose its grip on you when you lean into Him. Enjoy!
