I used to travel with a brilliant drama called “Toymaker and son” by Colin Harbinson. The premise of the story line was that when the Toymaker (God) made a world of toys he chose to give them minds and free will instead of making them puppets. They thad a close relationship with their maker, they talked and interacted with him enjoying their new world. This worked out well for awhile, but then, you guessed it, the toys chose to do things their own way. By doing so they built a wall up between themselves and the Toymaker. Access became laborious.
In the drama the Toymaker actually turned his own son into a toy to make a way for the toys to have direct access to him again. Sound familiar?
We all would have done it. We all would have chosen the apple. Our pride and curiosity get the best of us and we tend to slip away from closeness with God.
The good news is that He always has more for us!
More adventure, more closeness… more choices.
The “bad” news is that it’s up to us to choose well!
Bad news because we tend to slip away from our first love, from living a life close to Him. Bad news because it takes work to remain focused and connected.
Here’s a simple formula that will help. Two simple ways to go deeper in your faith. You ready for it?
1) Get into His word.
He wrote stories for us to learn from and gave pathways for us to be close to Him. The best way I have found to do this is to actively look for something.
If you know you need to sweep your kitchen floor, you do it out of duty and it gets done but your heart may be elsewhere. However, if you knew that someone left a diamond on your kitchen floor, your sweeping efforts would be much different.
I look hard when I read by picking several themes for the year and associating them with highlighter colors. This has completely revolutionized my Bible reading. As I am looking for powerful questions, or word pictures, or statements about truth/lies or faith, I am on a quest when I read now.
Here’s some ideas of themes to be looking for:
- Keys about prayer
- How people hear from God
- Character qualities of God
What are you looking for?
Or are you just sweeping because you’re supposed to?
2) Walk in faith.
This one is even harder than the first. Faith = Risk If there is no risk involved it’s probably not faith, it’s just a facts or hard work.
God always has something new for us. The adventures are endless. He built us to want adventure, but all to often we go looking for thrills in all the wrong places. Not just the obviously sinful ones, but even ones that seem innocuous.
The key is in an active relationship with Him.
If you can’t say what your focus is in your walk with God then you really don’t know where you are going or where He is guiding you. You may be stuck in apathy or pride. You may be distracted by things of this world. God always has a new “next” for us.
Sometimes the next is letting go of something that is holding us back. Sometimes it is a new goal. It can even be a focus on celebration or rest. Whatever it is, it is an intentional connection with whatever God is speaking with you about in your life.
I can’t say I always get this one right. Sometimes I don’t receive the outcome I hoped for. Sometimes I wonder if I wasn’t listening well. But I always move forward, and I think that pleases Him. We are in this together. I am learning.
