Hi, I’m Life Coach and Coach Trainer Cindy Scott and I am asked this first question on a regular basis. To be honest, it’s always a little tricky to answer. The use of this word “Coaching”started a ways back when it was first mentioned in reference to the use of a coach (like the pumpkin in “Cinderella”) as a vehicle to get from one place to another. I think most everyone who uses the word “Coaching” would agree with that definition.
There are basically two kinds of Coaching. The first is the kind of Coach that leads a team. Athletic teams have coaches and some churches might hire a Coach that would help them get from one place to another by laying out a strategy or plan. Wayne Hedlund does this type of Coaching, you can find him at www.transformingleader.org.
Recently another type of Coaching has come on the scene. This type of Coaching has the context of being a means to get from a certain here to a certain there as well, but the way it happens is different. In this new paradigm ‘Coaching’ is a set of conversational tools used by trained individuals to come alongside a person as a thinking partner, helping them to hear from God and move forward in whatever areas and whatever ways they sense God is guiding them. Lifeforming Leadership Caoching says coaching is “a one-on-one relationship where a coach helps you take the actions you want to take to reach a goal. Coaches are personal change experts who help others fulfill their destiny… coaches help others identify important goals and priorities, strategize about how to reach them, and overcome obstacles that crop up along the way.” In short, Coaching is place for people to make plans to build a uniquely personal bridge from here to there.
I think if I could have coined the term for this type of Coaching I would picked the word “Bridging” instead, which is why the ministry I work with is called “Bridges to what could be…” Bridges Coaching offers both individual Life Coaching as well as Coach Training for those interested in using these tools in their personal lives, businesses and ministries. And the Elim family is offered discounts on both! If you personally would like to be coached or if you would like to be trained in this unique, Biblical method of caring for people, then Coaching is for you! Both Coaching Foundations and Destiny by Design courses and classes will be offered this fall. Check out my website www.cindyscott.org for more info or contact me directly at email@example.com.
Everyone needs bridges. We are all being challenged to move from where are to what is next ~ whether that is working through a career change, healing a hurt, letting go of an addiction or mending a broken relationship ~ God always has a plan to move us along in our own life’s journey. A Coach helps build the Bridge God has in mind for you, to get from your here to your there.
