With OR For? That’s the offer God has been highlighting to me lately.
Yesterday I had an “Aha” moment while teaching – two actually. They happened while I was in a peer meeting with two of my Lifeforming Accelerated Coach Trainees.
Bryce Taylor, young adult pastor from the Living Room, in Lancaster, PA, was talking about a unique way he works with his sons. He is teaching them to look around and see what needs to be done. To actively engage in caring for their home and making it a comfortable place for their family.
What if God is like that?
What if “His will” is for us to just look around and see what needs to be done?
I think that it can be easy for us to get stuck on the idea that there is a certain and specific task that we are called to do and there is a good chance we may blow our one opportunity to make a difference in the world if we aren’t diligent about figuring out what that is and doing it.
What if He just wants us to be with Him? To work with Him and walk with Him instead of seeing Him as out there and away, recognizing Him as within us guiding us to see things we could do, giving us strength and wisdom to do it, walking through life together.
It’s a peaceful and freeing thought that we can do life WITH Him instead of just FOR Him.
The “For” mentality
- pleads for orders. “Just show me what to do and I’ll do it.”
- wants to do the “right” thing very badly.
- often feels condemned or confused.
- may segment their life to God serving times and breaks where I get to do whatever I want cuz I “put in my time.”
- is transactional.
The “With” mentality
- does whatever is in their heart, moving forward with the desires God placed there.
- wants to see the kingdom forwarded in their own life first and then in others.
- usually feels refreshed, but challenged. The adventure intrigues them.
- does not segment their life but rather enjoys each part of their life in relationship with God and often in open dialogue throughout the day.
- is transformational.
The other “Aha” moment I had was with the other peer in that same session – Ephraim Allgyer, staff at Elim Bible Institute. He was talking about the storms of life and how when the disciples were in the boat struggling in a storm they didn’t recognize Jesus walking toward them on the water. He pushed it out to say that we may not recognize Jesus coming to us, available to be with us, if we are looking for Him to come in a certain way.
Think about it. How do you expect Jesus to come to you in the midst of whatever storm you are going through right now?
What if His offer “never to leave us or forsake us” is more real than we experience?
I’ve been practicing the concept of WITH over FOR lately and it is causing me to talk to Him more. Just conversationally. I’m seeing God is there available to be with me much more than I recognized.
When I look for Him, He can be found. When I welcome Him He walks with me!
How about you? Are you working With OR For?
